The Museum of the Southwest is housed in a remarkable 1937 mansion, offering a glimpse of Midland oil baron Fred Turner’s homestead during one of the town’s boom periods. Constructed on 12 contiguous lots, the 5,300-square-foot opulent palace is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and contains nearly a dozen fireplaces and myriad ornamental architectural details. The museum’s art exhibits are scattered throughout the rooms along with several galleries added on to the house. The sprawling complex also includes a children’s museum and one of West Texas’ only publicly accessible planetariums.
