VICTORIAN SIMPLICITY

The Miers Home Museum, a restored historic home built in the 1890s, features artifacts and memorabilia about the pioneer heritage of the community of Sonora. The Museum archives copies of the local newspaper, The Devil's River News, from 1890 onward as well as a significant collection of vintage and historic photographs. The home is considered a “board and batten” construction, a technique used on exterior siding and interior paneling in which wide boards compose a wall and narrow wooden strips, called battens, are placed over the seams between the boards.

Also located on the museum grounds, the John & Mildred Cauthorn Memorial Building serves as a community meeting place inside a 1930s restored Santa Fe Depot building. In use until 1977, the depot remained vacant until the Sutton County Historical Society accepted the structure as a donation, restoring it courtesy of funds from the Cauthorn Trust. In addition, the grounds feature an amphitheater, host to community events.
